Travel Tips & General Information

Passports/Visas
A valid passport with an expiry date at least six months beyond the departure date from Namibia is required. A visa is not required for Canadian or U.S. passport holders for stays less than 3 months in length.

Health Requirements
Visitors going to areas where there may be a risk of malaria are advised to take a course of anti-malaria tablets. Insect repellent is also recommended. Medical facilities in Namibia are good; there are well-equipped hospitals in all major centres. Tap water is safe to drink.

Currency
The unit of currency is the Namibia Dollar, fixed at the exchange rate of the South African Rand. It is divided into 100 cents. Travelers cheques are accepted at any commercial bank. Major credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club and American Express) are accepted in main centres, most hotels, shops and in the national park camps. Both the Namib Dollar and the South African Rand, (currently at par), can be used to purchase goods and services. ATMs (automated banking machines) are available in any major centre.

What to Wear
Always pack for hot and cold conditions, year round. Carry a hat and always use a high SP factor sunscreen. Sunglasses are a must - consider sunglasses with sideshields to protect your eyes from the dust. A light-weight windbreaker often comes in handy.

In the Namib summer from October to April, temperatures range from 15°C in to 34°C (in the Gobabis area), cooling significantly at night. Light cotton clothing is a good choice during the day, but make sure to pack a sweater or light jacket as temperatures drop at night.

Winters are mild compared with those in Europe, but temperatures can occasionally drop to the freezing point from June to September, so if traveling in that time-frame, a jacket, sweaters and jeans should be taken as well as shorts, T-shirts and bathing suit. The rainy season is from late November until mid March. Daylight saving puts Namibia 1 hour behind South Africa during the winter months.

What to Take
Don’t forget your camera, camcorder and binoculars. A flashlight is also handy. Stock up with plenty of film and batteries. Take sunglasses, suntan lotion and lip balm along as well. Light-weight gloves are useful, especially for early mornings.
